Martin DVD A Trifecta of Divorce On the outside, Dean Martin seemed to have it made. He was a popular and brilliant singer and showman. However his personal life was more than often than not in shambles. During the course of his life he had three different marriages and eight sons. They were both extremely young at the time of his first marriage. His wife, Betty McDonald was only 19 during their Octover, 1940 wedding. He was slightly older at the age of 23. However this relationship was not on a course to last for long. Martin was constantly seeing women on the side, and this put a huge block in their relationship. His career had taken him on many long absences to nightclubs and casinos. He took advantage of this time away from his wife and constantly cheated on his wife. Whether Betty was an alcoholic before she discovered this or if he drove her to it we will never know. At the end of 9 years, they had both had enough and called it quits. The four children they had during this relationship were all put in Martin’s care as Betty moved to San Francisco. They maintained a friendship after the divorce, but many speculate that the relationship was more than just friendship. His second marriage lasted longer; his marriage with Jeanne Biegger lasted for 24 years. They had three sons together during this marriage, but the oldest, Dino, died in a plane crash in 1987. Martin and Biegger divorced in 1973 after 24 years of marriage. Through a strange set of actions, Martin met Catherine Hawn, who would go on to be his third wife. Hawn was a receptionist at a hair salon. Martin’s manager met her and through that the two would hit it off. When he organized a date between Hawn and Martin, the two got along quite well. Eventually she became his third wife and he adopted her daughter. This marriage only lasted three years before he divorced for the final time. After his third divorce he eventually went back to his first wife, Betty. Although she supported him as his health weakened, they never remarried.
